Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir played important role in promoting AhlulBayt (a.s.) school in East Africa: Shahedi

On the occasion of the demise of the divine scholar, the preacher of the teachings of the Quran and AhlulBayt (a.s.) in East Africa, and Kenyan member of the General Assembly of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly, Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir Juma, a commemoration was held online and in person on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, from 19:00 Tehran time at conference Hall of AhlulBayt (a.s.).

Referring to the story of his acquaintance with Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir, Hojat al-Islam Sayed Mohammad Shahedi, the former director of the representation of Al-Mustafa (p.b.u.h) International University in Tanzania, said at the ceremony, “I first met him in 2010. At that time, I was the representative of Al-Mustafa (p.b.u.h) International University in Tanzania, and I traveled to Kenya to visit seminaries. Every time I traveled to Tanzania, I met Sheikh Abdullahi Nasser, and I found him a humble and smiling man who warmly welcomed his guests.”

“Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir met his teacher Sheikh Mohammad Ghazali in 1955. He talked to his teacher about what was on his mind about the AhlulBayt (a.s.) school. Then, Sheikh Mohammad Ghazali presented him with the book Al-Ghadir, and Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir became a Shiite with this book. But Sheikh Mohammad Ghazali asked Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir not to declare his Shiism because people are not ready to accept this. Therefore, Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir observed Taqiyya. Khoja Shiites once asked him in Mombasa to speak at their Husseiniyah on Ashura Day, and Sheikh Abdullahi Nasser accepted the invitation. But when Sheikh Mohammad Ghazali heard this became angry and said to Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir, ‘By going to that Majlis, people will know that you are a Shiite. Therefore, I will write the text of the speech for you so that this does not happen,” he continued.

“Regarding his inclination towards the Shiite school, Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir observed Taqiyya for many years until the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran. During Imam Khomeini’s presence in Paris, Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir translated his speeches into Swahili and English and distributed them among Kenyan Muslims. In 1980, Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir declared his Shiism in a ceremony attended by many people. He was close to Saudi and Wahhabi scholars at the time and was even selected by Saudi Arabia to receive an award. But after the announcement of Sheikh Abdullahi Nasser Shiism, the award was canceled,” added the former director of the representation of Al-Mustafa (p.b.u.h) International University.

“This scholar became Shiite through search, research and study. Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir did not study in seminaries, but his education was academic. He entered politics and was a member of the Kenyan parliament for many years. Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir cooperated with the Oxford University Office in Kenya, and wrote various books on Shia, including “Shia in History”, “Shia and the Quran”, “Shia and Taqiyya”, “Shia and Hadith”, and “Shia and history”. Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir wrote 20 books on Islam and Islamic concepts,” Shahedi stated, referring to the reason for Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir’s inclination towards the Shiite school.

“Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir was one of Kenya’s leading speakers, and his speech tapes were sold many times in the country. Four thousand cassettes of speeches from this prominent scholar remain. Sheikh Abdillahi Nasir also participated in television debates and traveled to Tanzania to deliver speeches. He was a humble and virtuous man who promoted the Shia among the youth of Kenya and many parts of East Africa,” he mentioned.
