ABWA’s Message on the Demise of the Ismaili Shiite Leader

According to the official information website of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly - On the occasion of the demise of Shah Karim Aga Khan IV, the leader of the Nizari Ismaili Shiites, the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly issued a message, expressing condolences and wishing success in service for Aga Khan V.

The message noted that the demise of Aga Khan IV, following 68 years of leading the Ismaili Shiites, has brought grief and sorrow to his followers and admirers across the world. The AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly regarded his death as a lesson for all, given his prominence, capabilities, and wealth. The message referred to the Quranic verse, “كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ” (Every soul shall taste death) (3:185), emphasizing that life in this transient world inevitably ends in death and transition to the eternal life of the hereafter.

A section of the message reads, “This scholar of Islamic history, the founder and head of the Aga Khan Development Network, and the leader of the Ismailis, who was of Iranian and Qajar descent, was appointed as the leader of the Nizari Ismaili Shiites at the age of 20, under the will of his grandfather Aga Khan III, to, as he stated, bring about a perspective and lifestyle suited to the times. Aga Khan IV adhered to this will and announced his intention to continue the efforts of his predecessor in establishing modern institutions to improve the quality of life for the Nizari Ismailis. He dedicated his wealth, part of which came from tithes paid by Ismaili followers worldwide, to this cause. In addition to development efforts, he was also committed to education and research.”

In this message, the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly extended condolences to his children, the staff of the Ismaili Imamate Administration in Lisbon, the Aga Khan Development Network and its affiliated institutions, the Ismaili Shiite brothers worldwide, and all his enthusiasts. The Assembly also prayed to the Almighty for the deceased’s forgiveness, patience for his bereaved family, and success in service for his successor, Rahim Hosseini Aga Khan V, a senior executive in the Aga Khan Development Network.
